Ever since they were tiny, we have been taking our kids out sailing. Being out on the water, wind in our hair, having a complete new view of our wonderful city. And you don’t have to own a boat! Make an online reservation for the desired time, send a text to Greenjoy, lifejackets on and off you go!
Sailing on an aluminium skiff (boat)
You’ve probably seen them in the Leidsevaart; the aluminium Greenjoy skiffs suited for 6-8 people. You get on behind the Haarlemse Stadsschouwburg and decide whether you want to go towards the Stadsbolwerken (Nieuwe Gracht) or towards Heemstede (Leidsevaart). Two hours is plenty of time to explore the water and take in the views of the city. On the Greenjoy website you have the option to choose when and how long you are planning to take the boat. Pricing varies per day and starts at €25 an hour. Click here for several sailing routes.
Haarlem on the water
Our city sure has a different view from the water. Windmill ‘de Adriaan’, Teylers museum, the Nieuwe Bavo, and the old Droste factory all look even more impressive. Since the electric boats are nearly soundless, you can easily tell your kids all about the views without having to shout over the noise of the engine.
Kids can take the wheel
Since you are allowed to sail at a maximum speed in the city, the Greenjoy skiffs are set to sail at 6 km an hour. Making it safe for kids and adults alike. With a little help, the kids might even be able to take to the wheel. And while you’re at it, let the kids use their scooping nets to scoop up some plastic from the water.
Pizza on the boat
While it is a lot of fun to have a picnic basket filled with yummy goodies, you can also opt to dock at Stadstrand de Oerkap for example, where they serve delicious clay-oven pizzas to take on the boat with you.
